A village full of history and art, whose name suggests the Latin “Super Sanum” and therefore a healthy place, probably because of the “Belvedere Woods” full of oak trees.

The historic centre is worth visiting to see the Mother Church of the Archangel Michael (1753) and the Castle which was built, by order of two Generals of Charles V, after the battle at the foot of the hill in 1528.

Here there was the small Victory church which was subsequently destroyed but whose altar was taken to the Basilian crypt – one of the few not underground – called the Coelimanna or Virgo Manna Coeli. The origins of the crypt are lost in the mists of time, and there are those who believe it to have been inhabited in prehistoric times given the proximity of two Palaeolithic menhirs.

Situated on the road between Supersano and Casarano, the crypt has been dug out of the rock, close to the cemetery, and next to it is the Shrine of the Madonna of Coelimanna built in 1746. Inside there are two altars, the remains of a step-seat and of a baptismal font, a few closet type spaces and frescoes from the 13th to 17th centuries.
